December 9, 2023

Next Time: Sat. 12/16, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

Several newcomers joined a batch of regulars for this episode of the Jazz Workshop: Jan (trumpet), Randy (trombone), and W. Rayford (drums), joined Sam (trumpet, trombone), John (trombone, piano), Raphael (bass), Vern (accordion), Steve H. (piano, soprano), and Serdar (guitar) for a rollicking time.

Your scribe got things rolling with a handout version of Silver Bells in 4, rather than the usual 3. Raphael called an old one, Jersey Bounce (III-223). Vern thought Cherokee (I-77) would sound good on his squeezebox, and he wasn't wrong. Speaking of squeezing. Rayford opted for Just Squeeze Me (III-226). Randy shook things up with Watermelon Man (III-429). Sam chose the blues with Parker's Lazy Bird (III-53). John kept us working hard by going to Brazil (III-60). Serdar wanted to get more comfortable with Rollins' Oleo I-309). Yours truly got another shot in, with a Sing, Sing, Sing-based version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (handout).

Given the number of solos there were to be played, that's as far as we got by 1:30, when several musicians had to leave. But a solid rhythm section remained as your scribe headed out, so he assumes that two or three more tunes were wrestled with before the afternoon wrapped up.

Hope to see you next time!

December 2, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 12/9, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

Your scribe was unable to make it to the session this past weekend, but has at least some notes of what took place.

Present were Sam (trumpet, trombone), Jack (trumpet), John (trombone), Raphael (bass), Vern (accordion), Serdar (guitar), and Steve C. (piano).

Tunes played: Sam, Dindi (II); Jack, I Remember You (II); John, Oye Como Va (II); Serdar, On the Sunny Side of the Street (II); Steve C., A Weaver of Dreams (II); Raphael, Heat Wave (III); Vern, Skylark (III); Sam, Parisian Thoroughfare (II).

At this point the notetaker had to leave, so that's all we have to report.

Hope to see you soon!

November 25, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 12/2, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale, St. Louis Park)

A pretty good showing this week: Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve C. (piano), Raphael (bass), Jack (trumpet), Ari (trumpet), Al (tenor), Steve H (soprano), and Serdar (guitar).

Your scribe was a tad late, but the word is that the first two tunes were from Sam, who called Blue Monk (I-xx), followed by Steve C.'s choice of Groovin' High (II-xxx). Raphael was up next, deciding on Whisper Not (II-4xx). Ari opted for a bouncy version of Autumn Leaves (I-39). Jack chose to sing on I Thought About You (II-180). Al challenged us with Coltrane's Moment's Notice (I-280). Your scribe pulled out a handout of a mash-up of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Blue Monk. Serdar made his first call All Blues (I-18). Steve C got another chance, going to Lady Bird (I-235). When yours truly was departing, the gang were working on Raphael's choice of Bolivia (III-58).

Hope to see you next time!

November 18, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 11/25, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

We're in the basement theater. As of last time, the signs encouraging masks had been removed, so things are looking up.

This week's gang included Steve C (piano), Steve H (soprano), Jack (trumpet), Raphael (bass), Sam (trumpet and trombone), and Serdar (guitar).

Your scribe kicked things off with a medium version of Honeysuckle Rose (II-167). Jack directed us to a mixed ballad and double-time feel on When Sunny Gets Blue (I-440). Steve C took the typical ballad, We'll Be Together Again (I-xxx), at a medium swing pace. Raphael changed things up entirely with El Gaucho (I-131). Sam couldn't find the tune he wanted, but instead opted for Killer Joe (II-229), which worked out quite well, thank you.

Round 2 began with Jack's call for a mid-tempo lope through There Will Never Be Another You (I-407). Yours truly pulled out a handout of Irving Berlin's Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep, shifting from ballad to light swing and back again. Serdar finally got a pick, going with On the Sunny Side of the Street (II-xxx). Your scribe shifted over to piano, and Raphael called the Coltrane bit, Lazy Bird (I-241). As Jack and said scribe were pulling up stakes, Sam was trying to organize the remaining trio on the jazz waltz Three Flowers (I-412).

Hope to see you next time.

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 11, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 11/18, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

In case anyone is worried, there has been no requirement for masks recently.

Things were a little slow at the Workshop again. Sam (trumpet, trombone) and Steve H (piano) were debating whether to play, when Jack (trumpet) arrived. We got in one tune before--surprise!--Serdar (guitar) came in and was ready to try to play, splinted arm and all. A couple of us had to leave by 1:00, so it was a shorter time span, but we did manage to play the following:

Manteca (II-xxx)  Sam

Too Young (II-403)  Steve

Doxy (II-111)  Sam

Speak Low (II-xxx)  Jack

Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise (II-355)  Serdar

A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square  (III-302)  Steve

In A Little Spanish Town  (III-197)  Sam

Sure hope to see more of you next time!

October 28, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 11/04, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

A small but perfectly workable group gathered for this particular hoedown: Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve C. (piano), Raphael (bass), and Steve H. (alto).

Sam, as usual, called the first number, and it really is a number: BR-2, in a revised handout from last time. We got off to a swinging, bluesy start. Your scribe, opting for Halloween-themed tunes, went to This Masquerade (II-496), more as a Latin than as its original rock feel. Steve C. did not feel the need to revise anything, calling for Yardbird Suite (II-433). Raphael decided on Daahoud (I-96), though we had to downshift twice before we found the groove.

Back to Sam again, who thought a Halloween theme should include a moon-based song, chose How High The Moon (I-180). Yours truly thought we needed to keep an eye out for Killer Joe (II-229). Steve C. took us to another, more easy-going Latin groove with Lucky Southern (I-255). Raphael went to classic Cole Porter, I Love You (I-190).

Time for a third round, and Sam called for more sky-based imagery in Nuages (I-307). Yours truly was not letting go of Halloween yet, turning to Witchcraft (III-452). Steve C. thought Lullaby of the Leaves (III-260) captured that autumn feeling. Raphael brought it home with his choice of A Night in Tunisia (I-302).

Here's hoping you will join us next time!

October 21, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 10/28, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

A core group showed up for jazz jamming this past session: Sam (trumpet, trombone), Raphael (bass), Steve H (piano, soprano), Jack (trumpet), and Serdar (guitar).

Things got rolling, as usual, with Sam's choice, Line For Lyons (III-240) at an easygoing pace. Jack went to a ballad, Everything Happens To Me (III-114). Your scribe dug back for a peppy, early tune, I Can't Give You Anything But Love (I-185). Raphael got much more contemporary, calling This I Dig Of You (II-395).

Going around again, Sam made the Workshoppers work on Moment's Notice (I-280). Jack got classic, opting for There Will Never Be Another You (I-207). Serdar finally got a chance, pulling out On The Sunny Side Of The Street (II-298). Yours truly chose a more "floaty" tune, Whisper Not (II-422). Raphael picked up the pace with In Walked Bud (II-200). Sam closed things out with another tricky one, Chitlins Con Carne (I-87). Sam and Serdar closed things out with their now-traditional St. Thomas (II-xxx).

Hope to see you next time!

Steve   Girl Talk (II-151)

Sam     Footprints (I-144)

Your scribe continued to fill in on keyboards while the real piano player is out of town. Tunes played:

Three Little Words (III-406) Raphael

September 30, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 10/7, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

A peculiar day of duos and trios. Participants were Sam (trumpet), Steve H. (piano, soprano), Jack (trumpet), and Serdar (guitar).

Sam and yours truly were the only two at the beginning, and after waiting a few minutes, decided to take on Moanin', which proved tricky when our charts did not match. However, we worked out the details and made our way through it. Meanwhile, Jack arrived, and joined us on your scribe's choice, Angel Eyes. Jack then opted for Dancing on the Ceiling. Sam's next choice was Moment's Notice. Someone then called C-Jam Blues, which went without incident.

Sam had to leave, but Jack stuck around for some duets on ballads, first (I Don't Stand)A Ghost of a Chance, followed by Georgia on My Mind.

By this time, Serdar, had arrived, but Jack had to head out, so now it was guitar/sax duets, with piano backing up the guitar solos. We tackled Blue Monk, Witchcraft, On the Sunny Side of the Street, Somebody Loves Me, Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans, Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me, All the Things You Are, and, of course, St. Thomas.

Here's hoping more people can make it this weekend!

September 23, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 9/30, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

Come when you can. Leave when you must.

Another workable crowd assembled for this week's meeting: Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve H (alto), Raphael (bass), Steve C (piano), Bill (vocals), and Serdar (guitar).

We began, as usual, with Sam's choice, this time Honeysuckle Rose (II-167). Yours truly pushed the tempo just a little bit with It Could Happen To You (II-204). Steve C found another mid-tempo tune that doesn't get out enough, Earl Hines' Rosetta (II-332). Raphael found yet another relatively unfamiliar tune, this time Russian Lullaby (II-3xx). Back around to Sam, we took on a ballad-y version of It Might As Well Be Spring (II-205).

Bill was finally set up, and got in a couple: Blue Moon, which we played from iReal Pro and memory; and Just In Time (II-222). Your scribe pulled an original out of the bag, Smokey Blues. Serdar got his first call, going to On The Sunny Side Of The Street (II or III); Bill was able to join in the fun. Bill took another, opting for September Song (handout). Steve C needed to head out early, so his last choice of the day was Fly Me To The Moon (II-135)--which, of course, Bill was happy to join. Raphael made us do a bit of work on a tune, Little Sunflower (II-244) with very few chord changes, which stretches one's creativity. Bill called one more, Pennies From Heaven (II-309) before most of us had to head out. Sam and Serdar accompanied our packing up with St. James Infirmary and St. Thomas.

Hope to see you next time!

September 16, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 9/23, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

We had a limited but workable gathering: Steve C (piano), Steve H (percussion), John C (trombone), Jack (trumpet), and Raphael (bass).

Your scribe got things running with Lullaby Of The Leaves (III-260). Nancy With The Laughing Face (III-298) was Jack's first pick. Steve C upped the tempo to a medium swing with Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams (III-455). Raphael took us to the unfamiliar by opting for Time Was (III-409). John C brought us back to our usual stomping grounds, and lullabies, calling Lullaby Of Birdland (I-256). Yours truly got the second go-around going with a not-too-slow rendering of Lover Man (II-255). Jack chose an old standby, Time After Time (III-408). Steve C's next one was another mid-tempo gem, Autumn Leaves. Raphael tried to boost the energy another notch, calling Mountain Greenery (III-285). John found a classic bit of jazz history, Moten Swing (II-279). Almost out of time, your scribe went to another old one, Nevertheless (III-300). We finished our time together with Jack's choice, Smile (IV-401).

September 9, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 9/16, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

Your scribe did not think this past session was going to take off at all at first, but after a short while, we had assembled a reasonable contingent of players: Sam (trumpet, trombone), Bill (vocals), Steve H (piano), John (bass), and Serdar (guitar).

Sam, as usual, got the ball rolling with his pick, this time Dindi (II-105). Bill had been wanting to rehearse At Last for a gig, and we finally had enough music and chutzpah to pull it off; sounded pretty good. John opted for the classic All The Things You Are (I-18). Serdar took the next call for us to play On The Sunny Side Of The Street (II-xxx). Yours truly chose Milt Jackson's eponymous Bags' Groove (II-30).

Bill took the next one, going with I Remember You (II-179). Around to Sam again, we were treated to Perdido (II-311). Bill's vocal choice next was Dream A Little Dream Of Me (handout). Serdar took us to a medium swing version of the ever-popular Autumn Leaves (I-39); Bill joined in with a vocal. Sam got another call, this time Four (I-149). We finished up with Bill's closer, The Girl From Ipanema (I-158).

Hope to see you this coming weekend!

September 2, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 9/9, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale, St. Louis Park)

Last week, masks were no longer required in the building. But keep your eyes open for notices.

An odd assortment of players stopped in for our festivities: Sam (trumpet/trombone), Raphael (bass), John (bass), Steve H (piano, soprano), and Bill (vocals).

Your scribe spent most of his time at the workshop this time filling in at the keyboard, but was glad to be able to help, to some lesser degree. Raphael and yours truly were just a duo to get things underway, with Raphael's call, Dewey Square. The rest showed up before our next tune, also Raphaels choice, Elora, and Sam was able to join in on that. A resident who stopped in to listen asked for Waltz for Debby, which we managed to get through reasonably well. John got on board with Song for My Father. Bill got to pick the next two: All of Me, and Autumn Leaves. Sam got in the act by requesting All of You. John thought something Latin would go down well, and went with How Insensitive. Bill got another vocal chance, going to Ain't Misbehavin'. Yours truly finally took a swing with a medium swing version of Here's That Rainy Day. Bill got in his final option, Dream A Little Dream of Me. We rounded off the afternoon with John calling Mr. P.C.

Here's hoping to see you soon!

August 26, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 9/2, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale, St. Louis Park)

Masks were still necessary in the building this past session, so be prepared.

Attendance picked up this time out, with appearances by Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve H (soprano, piano), Steve D (trumpet), Steve C (piano), Raphael (bass), Jack (trumpet), David (trombone), and Ari (trumpet).

We got rolling with Sam's pick, Now's The Time (I-293) at an easy pace. Jack took things down with a very relaxed (and very cool) version of So What (I-364), which had the added advantage that we had the right horns present to play all five parts! We picked things up with Steve C's call, In Walked Bud (II-200). Raphael gave us our first ballad of the day, Infant Eyes (II-202). We stayed right in the same spot in the book, but went more up-tempo on your scribe's choice, It Could Happen To You (II-204).

Back around to Sam, who opted for a bit of Latin in So Nice (I-362). Steve D stuck to the Latin rhythms, turning to Little Boat (I-245). Jack returned to Miles with his call, Solar (I-363). Steve C. chose a Tad Dameron classic, Lady Bird (I-xxx).  Yours truly took over piano duties for the last two: Raphael's pick, Invitation (I-297), and Ari's choice, Song For My Father (I-373).

See you next time!

I Love Paris (Steve)

Beautiful Love (Raphael)

Cherokee (Steve)

Daahoud (Raphael)

Lullaby of Birdland (Sam)

Easy Street (Raphael)

Cry Me A River (Sam)

Somebody Loves Me (Steve)

August 5, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 8/12, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale, St. Louis Park)

In the basement theater. We're the Jazz Jam.

Our last session brought out regulars and semi-regulars Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve H (piano, soprano), John (trombone, piano), Raphael (bass), Bill (vocals), Vern (accordian), and Serdar (guitar).

We got things rolling with Sam's call, Bye Bye Blackbird (II-73). Going around the horn, so to speak, John made the next choice, Blue Skies (II-58). Your scribe opted for Midnight Mood (I-269), which turned out to be trickier than it looked. Bill, who had come in and set up after we had begun, decided to reprise Blue Skies. Raphael was in a traditional mood this time, going with On the Sunny Side of the Street (II-298). Vern tried to get us into an up-tempo swing on Autumn Leaves (I-39), but after several false starts we settled back down successfully to a medium up. Bill passed around a handout in his key of Dream A Little Dream Of Me.

The circle having been completed, Sam took another turn, opting for Bernie's Tune (III-39). Yours truly got a second shot, pulling out Stella By Starlight (I-382). Bill's third choice was I've Got You Under My Skin (handout). John went with the Ellington classic, Perdido (II-311).

A number of us had to leave at this point, so Sam and Serdar serenaded us in packing up with several choruses of St. Thomas (II-339).

Hope you can make it this week!

July 29, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 8/5, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale, St. Louis Park)

Present at our last meeting were Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve C (piano), John (trombone), Jack (trumpet), Raphael (bass), Steve H (alto), and David (trombone).

We got started with the apropos Heat Wave (III-143), Sam's choice. Staying with the hot theme, your scribe opted for East of the Sun (III-104). Sticking to the air theme, John's call was Come Fly With Me (III-80). Finally tossing aside the theme, and the RB volume, Jack went with I Remember You (II-179). Steve C went a little more upbeat with Pennies From Heaven (II-309). Billy Strayhorn's surprisingly swingy Upper Manhattan Medical Group (I-426) was Raphael decision.

Starting round two, and returning to our heat theme, Sam went to Miles' classic Solar (I-363). Yours truly stayed with the theme, but chose the breezy On The Sunny Side Of The Street (II-298). John decided on a bit of Latin, Jobim's A-Train-based So Danco Samba (III-360). Your scribe took over the keyboard for one last tune, Jack's call, I Thought About You (I-280).

Too many people had to leave at that point, so the fun had to end. But it continues this weekend. Hope to see you there!

July 22, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 7/29, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale, St. Louis Park)

An active session at the Workshop this week, with the addition of old-timer (haven't seen him since the McRae days) Tom (drums), along with regulars Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve C (piano), Jack (trumpet), Steve H (soprano), Raphael (bass), and Serdar (guitar).

Sam launched the boat this week with Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise (II-355). Jack got the next call, going with Four (I-149). Tom took us where we had not been previously, No More Blues (Chega de Saudade) (I-74). Steve C had a song for our trip, Road Song (I-344). Raphael took us to a beautiful place (hard to play, though), Joy Spring (I-244). Serdar took us to a 3/4 place with Alice in Wonderland (I-17). All the way around to yours truly, who pulled out a handout of the 1923 tune by Harry Archer, I Love You.

Round two began with Jack's choice of Dancing on the Ceiling (I-98). Sam tried to get us in a funk mode with Sister Sadie (III-355). Tom went with the more familiar Bye Bye Blackbird (II-73). Steve C, also carrying handouts, pulled out a chart of Never Never Land. Raphael's pick the second time around was You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To (II-436). Serdar rounded off the afternoon with a bossa, How Insensitive

Hope to see you there this week!

The Workshop cruised smoothly this past weekend with a decent summer attendance: Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve C (piano), Jack (trumpet), Steve H (soprano), Raphael (bass), and Bill (vocals).

We started, as usual, with a call from Sam, Have You Met Miss Jones (I-172). Your scribe moved to a the less swingy, more floaty Lullaby of the Leaves (III-266). Jack opted for Satin Doll (I-349); even Bill joined in for a vocal chorus. Bill got the next pick, going to a handout version of My Funny Valentine. Steve C went with Time After Time (III-408), and this time Jack threw in a vocal. Bill came back with another handout version, this time of All The Way. Raphael took us old school with Jersey Bounce (III-223).

Starting round two, Sam turned to Nostalgia in Times Square (I-306). Another vocal from Bill followed, this time September Song (handout). Yours truly pulled out the standard East of the Sun (III-104). Jack went to the Miles Davis favorite, Tune Up (I-418), though at a more relaxed clip than the original. Bill's next vocal was the easy-going More Than You Know (II-277). Steve C kept us on our toes with a Latin version of What A Difference A Day Made (III-430). Several of us had to pull up stakes at this point, so the afternoon wrapped up with a call by Bill, Come Fly With Me (III-80).

This weekend, then?

The gang assembled once again for some jazz fun. Present were Sam (trumpet, trombone), David (trombone), Steve C (piano), Raphael (bass), Steve H (alto), Carl (trombone), Bill (vocals), and Ari (trumpet).

As usual, Sam got us started, with the unusual (unless you've been around the Workshop for a while) Dear Old Stockholm (I-102). David took the next call, Black Coffee (I-45) at a somewhat faster clip than what you might generally hear. Bill took his first vocal turn, Ain't Misbehavin' (handout in his key). Carl opted for the Ellington ballad Mood Indigo (I-279). Bill's next vocal selection was I'll Take Romance (handout). Steve C. turned the mood a little lighter with If I Were A Bell (II-194). Raphael got the next pick, Move (II-280), on which just about everyone took extra choruses. Bill came back to do I've Got You Under My Skin (handout) Yours truly finally got a turn shortly before heading out for the day, and chose Paul Desmond's Wendy (II-418). Ari pulled out something new to everyone, Jimmy Rowles' 502 Blues (I-142). Your scribe slipped out during that one, but apparently things continued without him. Sam pulled out Song For My Father (I-373). The festivities closed with David's choice, One Note Samba (I-314).

Hope to see you next time!

Next Time: Sat., 6/10, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

"Jazz Jam" in the basement theater. Bring your own stand.

Present at this session were Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve H (piano), Carl (trombone), Dave (trombone), and Bill (vocals).

It was an unusual session, with only yours truly to plunk out rhythm, and three trombones (no waiting) to accompany the vocals. But we powered through and made the best of it. Unfortunately, your scribe seems to have lost the list of tunes we played, so you will just have to imagine the fun we had.

Until next time!

May 27, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 6/3, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

NO MORE MASKS REQUIRED!

Warning: The intersection of Wooddale and 36th St. will be closed for the foreseeable future as construction continues on the light rail line. If you are coming from the north, you may need to find a workaround.

Present were Steve H (soprano), Sam (trumpet, valve trombone), Steve C (piano), Raphael (bass), Jack K (trumpet), Carl (trombone), Vern (accordion), and Serdar (guitar).

The fun kicked off with Sam's first choice, Little Boat (I-245). Your scribe kicked things up a notch with Somebody Loves Me (I-369). Carl got us back in a laid-back mode, going with In A Mellow Tone (I-206). Jack kept the atmosphere mellow with an easy-going version of Bye Bye Blackbird (II-73). Steve C rasied the speed bar a touch, opting for the grammatically problematic You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To (II-436). Serdar announced when he walked through the door that he was going to call Summertime (IV-435), though when the time came, he went with a medium swing tempo. Raphael used his turn to present us all with a challenge, Charlie Parker's Segment (III-349), though we were grateful that he counted it off significantly slower than the original. Vern brought us back to ballad speed with In A Sentimental Mood (I-2xx).

Back to Sam, his second pick of the day was Pent Up House (I-324). Yours truly, just a tad tongue-in-cheek, called for a easy swing version of I Could Have Danced All Night (III-156). Carl and Jack having to depart earlier, Serdar took the next one, opting for All The Things You Are (I-18). Your scribe also had to depart, but has it on good authority that Steve C chose Pennies From Heaven (II-xxx), after which Raphael finished the session with Ceora (I-xx).

See you next time!

Next Time: Sat., 4/22, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

Masks in the building, please, until we are in the theater to play.

Good times as usual. Present were Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve H (soprano), Steve C (piano), Raphael (bass), Jack (trumpet), and Bill (vocals). Even Raphael's brother came all the way from France to listen!

Sam started things going with Moanin' (II-270). Jack went with the blues classic, Freddie Freeloader (I-157). Bill sang his first tune, Ain't Misbehavin' (handout in his key). Steve C. pulled out some Monk, this time the ballad Reflections (I-340). Raphael made a statement with I Love Paris (I-189). His brother showed all of us pictures of Paris as inspiration. Even Bill joined for a chorus. Bill took another, this time Come Fly With Me (III-80). Your scribe opted for Afternoon in Paris (I-12); more pictures were shown to get us in the mood. Bill went less swingy on his next song, September Song (handout).

Back to Sam again, he chose Triste (I-417). Jack had us Look for the Silver Lining (II-249). Bill called I Remember You (handout), and he did. Steve C. went with Stolen Moments (I-384). Your scribe was on his way out the door while that tune was in progress, so there might be more...

See you next time!

April 8, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 4/15, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale, St. Louis Park)

Masks in building until playing, please.

Present this time were Sam (trumpet, trombone), Steve C (piano), Steve H (alto), Raphael (bass), Bill (vocals), and Serdar (guitar).

Plenty of songs could be covered with fewer people. We began with Sam's choice, I'm Sitting On Top of The World (III-xxx). Your scribe opted for Irving Berlin's other Easter tune, I'm Putting All My Eggs In One Basket (II-187). Bill went to the great Fats Waller number Ain't Misbehavin' (handout). Steve C. felt Porter-ish, calling You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To (II-436). Raphael felt the need to shake things up with Minority (I-273). Bill took two: I'll Take Romance (handout), and September Song (handout). Serdar needed some blues, and went to Tenor Madness (II-390). Sam chose Four (I-149) for his next one. Steve C. went to the quiet If I Should Lose You (II-193). Bill went to the Real Books for Pennies from Heaven (II-309). The last thing your scribe was present for was Raphael's call, Elora (II-117). But apparently the Workshoppers also covered Oleo and Rosetta.

March 25, 2023

Next Time: Sat., Apr. 1, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park), in the basement theater.

Cancelled for this week due to snow. We will hope April 8 is better!

Masks in the building unless playing.

Another good crew showed up at one point or another: Sam (trumpet, trombone), Carl (trombone), Steve C (piano)(, Raphael (bass), Steve H (alto), Bill (vocals), Serdar (guitar), John (trombone), and Ari (trumpet, flugelhorn). Even Tom W stopped by to say hello.

Things began as usual with Sam's pick, this time Rosetta (II-341). Carl went blues with Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West (II-408). A little Parker was the choice of Steve C, who went with Yardbird Suite (II-433). Bill entered the fray with a vocal, opting for Just In Time (II-222). Another Parker tune was in the offing with Serdar's call, Billie's Bounce (II-44). Raphael went all porter with I Love You (I-190). Bill stuck to the Porter theme, going to a handout version of I've Got You Under My Skin. Yours truly, having just been to the Ordway that week, went with an easy swing on the ballad, I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face (III-192). Another vocal from Bill, this time Stardust (II-367). Ari decided to run with Autumn Leaves (I-39).

We finally came back around to Sam, who surprised us with Killer Joe (II-229). Bill got in one more vocal, The Lady Is A Tramp (II-227). It was reported to your scribe after the fact that the Workshop wrapped up after two more tunes: Serdar's choice, Oleo (I-309), and Ari's option, A Night In Tunisia (I-302).

Hope to see you at the Workshop, assuming we are not buried under another foot of snow.

Present were Sam (trumpet, trombone), John (trombone), Steve C (piano), Raphael (bass), Bill (vocals), Jack K (trumpet), Carl (trombone), Ari (trumpet), and Steve H (soprano).

From the top, the following people called the following tunes:

Sam: West Coast Blues (I-436)

Carl: In a Mellow Tone (I-206)

Bill: Dream A Little Dream of Me (a handout in Bill's key)

Bill: Come Fly With Me (II-80)

March 4, 2023

Next Time: Sat. 3/11, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

Masks in the building until playing, please.

Another nice turnout: Sam (trumpet, trombone), Jack K (trumpet), Jack H (tenor), Steve H (soprano), Steve C (piano), John (trombone), Raphael (bass), Carl (trombone), Bill (vocals), Ari (trumpet).

Sam began the festivities with Out of Nowhere (I-318). Your scribe went to a handout for a Latin version of the old Kalmar and Ruby tune, Thinking of You. John took us into deep waters with Dolphin Dance (I-119). Bill brought in music in his key on the old favorite, Dream A Little Dream of Me. Carl opted for the classic Latin tune Blue Bossa (I-50). Back to Bill for another vocal, we got another handout, this time for a little 3/4 bit, I'll Take Romance. Jack took a vocal shot as well, choosing Old Cape Cod (III-307). Serdar wanted to do  the folk song Dark Eyes as a gypsy jazz number, but in the Real Book (II-90) it was in 3, so that's what happened.

Yours truly had to head out during Dark Eyes, but it was reported to him that the last two numbers were chosen as a tribute to the recently departed Wayne Shorter. Steve C chose Black Nile, while Raphael called Deluge.

Hope you can join us for the fun soon.

This week we had another good turnout: Sam (trumpet, trombone), John (trombone, piano), Steve H (soprano, piano), Raphael (bass), Carl (trombone), Jack K (trumpet, rhythm), Bill (vocals), Ari (trumpet).

Things got a bit up-dumped, and your scribe was not always careful about marking down where the songs were coming from.

Sam did not mess around to get us started, calling Dear Old Stockholm (I-xxx). Bill sang Come Rain or Come Shine, but from a handout to be in his key. John pulled out something a little brighter and more Latin with Wave (I-4xx). Bill took chance, opting for I've Got the World on a String (also by handout). Carl found So What (I-364) amusing, and we mostly made it through. Jack wanted to sing himself, calling for It Could Happen To You (II-xxx). Bill handed out another one, this time a version of Don't Get Around Much Anymore. Yours truly pulled out an original he had written a number of years ago, She Wore Black. Vocal time for Bill again, this time right out of Real Book I, All of Me. When your scribe was packing up, the group was just about to settle into Minority.

Here's hoping we see you next time!

January 14, 2023

Next Time: Sat., 1/21, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park) in the basement theater.

Masks in the building when not playing!

Things are picking up at the Workshop (aka Jazz Jam). Plenty of participants: Jack H (tenor), Jack K (trumpet), John (trombone, piano), Sam (bass), Vern (accordion), Steve H (soprano, piano), Serdar (guitar), Bill (vocals) and Catherine (vocals). We had to fill in a few holes left by people who could not be there, but we managed.

Sam got things going with a bit of Latin,  Once I Loved (I-311). John got the next call, going to Afternoon in Paris (I-12). Jack H wanted to work on some harmonizations on the classic tune for such work, Sentimental Journey (II-343). We couldn't find enough copies of Jack K's first idea that were in the same key, so he switched over to Tune Up (I-4xx). Bill went for an easy swinger, All Of Me (I-20). Vern went even farther back, opting for Basin Street Blues (II-37). Bill got another turn and went to The Girl From Ipanema (I-158). Catherine, freshly arrived, asked for Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (I-335). Yours truly had an original, Lungotevere, in the bag for everyone to try out, recalling the Romani band he heard frequently on the Via del Corso; with an accordion and guitar on hand, it was the perfect opportunity. The next two songs up were My Romance and Night and Day, but your scribe was packing up and did not remember to write down any more information, though it is likely that another song or two were played before closing time.

Hope to see you there this week!

Hope to see you next time!
