Coda

Lena Horne, 1917-2009.

Ms. Horne, the voice of "Stormy Weather," has passed away at the age of 92. She began singing at the famed Cotton Club at the age of 16 and her career spanned six decades, including night clubs, recordings and film. Racist attitudes limited her film career quite severely despite her beauty and talent. During the "Red Scare" Ms. Horne found herself blacklisted in Hollywood, due to her progressive political attitude, and returned to nightclubs. She participated in the Civil Rights movement from the early 1940s and participated in the March On Washington in 1963. Her last great triumph was a one-woman show on Broadway, "Lena Horne: TheLady And Her Music," which started in 1981 and ran for over 300 performances. Ms. Horne performed into the 1990s. Her last albums, Seasons of a Life, was released in 2006.
