November 19, 2022

NEXT TIME: Sat., Nov. 26, 11am-2pm, basement theater of TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

Wear a mask into the building (you can remove it while playing). Use the parking lot entrance. Bring your own stand.

A decent sized contingent showed up for our "Jazz Jam" at TowerLight, and a number of residents stopped by for a few tunes to listen and applaud. Present were Steve C. (piano), Jack (trumpet and percussion), Steve H. (alto), Carl (trombone), Sam (trumpet and trombone), and Raphael (bass).

Yours truly got things under way with That Old Feeling (III-393). Carl waxed nostalgic in his choice of After You've Gone (III-12). The world faded into the background with Steve C's pick, Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams (III-455). Raphael opted for a warm and mellow version of Poor Butterfly (III-324). We stayed in an oldies mood with Sam's option, Honeysuckle Rose (II-167). Jack brought us back to a different era, deciding on Four (I-149).

Your scribe began a second round of tunes with an attempt at something Latin, going to Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (I-335), which took a while to get through. We returned to a bit of classic jazz with Carl's choice, Satin Doll (I-349). Steve C to us down a beautiful path with Beautiful Love (I-40). Raphael decided to make us work a bit, even on a ballad, choosing Coltrane's Naima (I-293). Some of us ran out of time and had to slip away as the group played Sam's pick, Parker's My Little Suede Shoes (II-382).

Here's hoping to see you at the next session!
