June 15, 2024

Next Time: Sat., 6/22, 11am-2pm, TowerLight (3601 Wooddale Ave., St. Louis Park)

Bring your own stand! We usually work out of the Real Book (Vols. I-IV)

An unusual mix of players this time out: Sam (trombone), Raphael (bass), Steve H (piano, alto), Jerry (guitar), and Craig (guitar).

Sam kicked things off with Charlie Parker's Au Privave (I-37)--not quite up to speed, but a credible rendition. Your scribe opted for Broadway (I-61) at a medium swing. Raphael challenged the group with A Night In Tunisia, which worked out fairly well once we worked out the form. Newcomer Jerry (welcome aboard!) got us rolling along Route 66 (II-xxx)--vocal included for free.

Sam got the next round going with his choice of Blue Skies (II-58). Craig took his first turn, calling Satin Doll (I-349). Based on an earlier misunderstanding, yours truly decided on the ballad A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square (III-302), with a light swing. Raphael used his second and last pick on Lover Come Back To Me (III-258).

After Raphael left, we carried on with Jerry's second choice (and vocal!), Don't Get Around Much Anymore (I-122). Sam went to an old classic, Shine (II-xxx). Craig got the last call of the day, going with St. Thomas (II-xxx).

See you next time!
